For our friends in Stockholm new to this beautiful tradition, a "diya" (or diya lampa in Swedish) is a small earthen lamp, traditionally made from clay (mitti). During Diwali, the "Festival of Lights," homes are decorated with rows of lit diyas. This tradition is deeply symbolic:

• Welcoming Goodness: The light from the diyas is believed to light the path for Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, to enter homes and bless the family.
• Symbol of Victory: It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.
• Creating a Sacred Atmosphere: The warm, gentle glow of a diya flame is considered pure and is essential for pooja (worship) and creating a serene, spiritual ambiance.

How to Use Your Decorative Diyas

Preparing and lighting your diyas is a beautiful ritual in itself.

1. Preparation (Optional Tip): To prevent the clay from absorbing too much oil, you can soak your new diyas in water for a few hours, then let them dry completely before use.
2. Place the Wick: Take a cotton wick (batti), roll it slightly, and place it in the center of the diya, with the tip pointing upwards.
3. Add Oil or Ghee: Fill the diya about three-quarters full with a suitable oil, like mustard oil, sesame oil, or preferably, pure Cow Ghee for its sacred significance.
4. Light Up: Light the tip of the wick. Place your beautifully lit diyas on windowsills, balconies, at the entrance of your home, or on your home altar (mandir).
5. Safety First: Always place diyas on a stable, fire-resistant surface, away from curtains, drafts, and out of reach of children and pets. Never leave lit diyas unattended.
